"We felt the need for the primary schools to get a wee understanding of different cultures because there are so many cultures now in Letterkenny and they’re not being recognised enough through the schools. I think it’s a benefit if you learn about different cultures at a young age because then you’ll have respect for them when you’re grown up.
When we started here, none of the participants knew each other and they’re all learning about each other’s culture. I didn’t know a lot about the African culture so I’m learning a lot through the boys and they’re learning a lot about travellers – before this, none of them had a clue – so everyone’s learning from each other ."

Respecting and Connecting Communities
The Respecting and Connecting Communities project aims to promote positive relationships between the traveller and the settled community in the county. The project involves a range of activities, undertaken by Donegal Travellers Project, to build better relationships and greater social interaction between the two communities. As part of the project, a book is being produced for primary school children to promote understanding of the many cultures represented in Co. Donegal. By teaching children about these different cultures at a young age, it is hoped that they will develop greater respect for each other, as they get older.
