"Our aim is to work with young people along the border area as well as with the adult volunteers who support them within their communities. We’re trying to challenge them on their attitudes of discrimination, racism, sectarianism and stereotypes. In everything that we do, we try to challenge the young people’s attitudes – why are you saying that? What gave you the idea? Where did you learn that? We do this through a range of means, including offering cross-border programmes.

We would see from the evaluations that we’ve done that there has been attitudinal change albeit sometimes very slightly. But we have definitely noticed it in the long-term projects such as the cross-border projects."

Cross Border Connections

The Cross Border Connections Programme is based in Lifford and managed through the Donegal Youth Service and the Donegal Community Based Youth Work Consortium. Its main aim is to work with young people, aged 5-20, throughout Donegal and along the border as well as the adult volunteers who support them within their communities. They offer cross border programmes which they run with young people in Donegal, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry. The project also runs a series of training programmes that incorporate personal development as well as elements of diversity including stereotypes, racism and discrimination to try to challenge the young people on the views that they have and instigate attitudinal change.
