"Most people here when they heard that a Japan Day had been arranged, they didn’t even know there were any Japanese people living here. Those who are here are quite isolated because they live rurally. And now, suddenly, there are so many Japanese people all together. And it’s brilliant to get an insight into their culture – just look what they brought. There’s flower arranging, traditional costume and food and music. And they’re so excited and they were afraid that no-one would come but as you can see there’s such an interest in their culture."

Japan Day
An afternoon of events celebrating Japanese culture took place on September 25th 2010 in Port na Fáilte, Letterkenny. An open invitation was extended to people from across the county to come and learn about Japanese customs and traditions. The event allowed the community of Japanese people living in Donegal and Derry to introduce and showcase their culture to the local community. During the celebrations, attendees were treated to karate demonstrations, flower arranging displays, Japanese music and singing, origami and Japanese writing. Traditional Japanese food was also served throughout the afternoon.
