"It’s not solely about doing sporting activities like this. It’s about the social benefits that come with doing this and integrating the kids. And we hope that maybe if these guys meet up somewhere in the future, that they’ve already met up through our courses and through our efforts of trying to integrate them into the community and hopefully then they’ll understand things a little bit better when they have a chance to put something back into the community themselves. And as funding is only maybe for a couple of years at a time, we have to be a wee bit more innovative in how we try and sustain the project. Hopefully we can leave behind a legacy where the kids can continue on doing their activities in the community."

Community Relations Through Sport

Community Relations Through Sport addresses social exclusion, racism and sectarianism through the medium of sport and physical activity. There is widespread belief in the key role sport can play in combating social exclusion at community level. The project seeks to address these social exclusion issues by engaging young people between 12 and 18 years of age from all religious backgrounds through a programme of capacity and confidence building, improving self-esteem and thereby contributing to a more vibrant and inclusive community. The programme operates in partnership with the established community/youth organisations within the identified areas in order to empower young people to provide answers to building trust within divided communities.
