New Libraries in Buncrana, Milford and CarndonaghNew Libraries in NetworkDonegal County Council has in recent years made great progress in developing its network of libraries around the county. The latest additions to the network are Carndonagh and Milford, while Bundoran is due to follow early next year. They will join the existing network: the Central Library in Letterkenny, Buncrana, Lifford, and Ramelton Community Libraries, and Leabharlann Phobail na Rosann in An Chlochán Liath/Dungloe. Buncrana was recently in the news when it won a prestigious award for the best small or medium sized Library in Ireland and Britain opened in 1999-2000.Carndonagh Irelands northernmost public libraryCarndonagh Community Library opened on 10th June last, with all elements of the Area Office now fully operational: Motor Tax, Housing, Planning etc. The Council intends that these various strands of service delivery will over time become much better integrated, and much more focused on the needs of people, than they have been when located in Lifford. In addition the Area Office houses a Community Information desk which is staffed by a trained adviser during office hours.Since Carndonagh Community Library opened some 1,730 members of the public have joined. Around half are from Carndonagh itself while a quarter are from Malin Town / Glengad area, and the rest from other parts of north Inishowen. There have been 14,700 visits to the Library, many of them making use of free access to the internet and to PCs which the Library offer. This is only the beginning, however, as during the month of September staff have organised a series of class visits from the schools in the area. All primary schools in north Inishowen will be invited to come to the Library and see what it has to offer.Milford serving Fanad and Ros aGhoillMilford Community Library opened to the public on 16th September 2002, along with the other Council services: Motor Tax, Housing, Planning etc. As in Carndonagh the Area Office houses a Community Information desk which will be staffed by a trained adviser during office hours.
