County Donegal Equality Strategy Officer
Ms. Úna Collier has been recruited as Equality Strategy Officer under the auspices of Donegal County Development Board and is based in the Community, Enterprise & Cultural Services Unit. The position of Equality Strategy Officer has been brought about through co-operation with Donegal County Council, Donegal Local Development Company, Inishowen Partnership Company and Meitheal Forbartha na Gaeltachta, with the aim of promoting equality initiatives around the county.
The Employment Equality Act (1998) and Equal Status Act (2000) have provided the impetus for such moves towards mainstreaming the issue of equality. These Acts prohibit discrimination in relation to employment and the provision of goods and services, on the following grounds: age, disability, race, gender, family status, marital status, religion, sexual orientation, and membership of the Traveller community.
The position of Equality Strategy Officer will incorporate many elements with the aim of highlighting the Equality agenda and developing a strategic framework for addressing equality issues in the county for statutory, community and voluntary sector organisations.
Equality initiatives include:

Carrying out equality audits and proofing of existing projects.

Providing information and advice in relation to equality legislation, equality policies and codes of practice.

Working with organisations on equality programme implementation.

Enhancing existing networks by incorporating the concept of equality.

Co-ordinating information on events taking place in Donegal around the European Year of People with Disabilities, 2003.
